Help! I Can’t Log into WordPress!!

Home / Non-SEO / Help! I Can’t Log into WordPress!!

So I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of text messages going off telling my this site was down.

I couldn’t figure out why – I hadn’t made any changes Friday, yet somehow my site had been down for a few hours.

It took a lot of research but I found out 2 things to help get my site back up that might help you.

Here’s what happened:

I woke up and started my day as usual – then I noticed my host monitoring service telling my that my site was down.  Wierd.  OK lets see what’s up.

First thing I did of course is try to visit this site.  Blank home page.  Wierd.  So I tried a couple other browsers.  Still blank home page.

After some researching i found out it could be a plugin causing problems, so the solution was to disable my plugins.

Except the normal way to disable plugins is to log into the admin dashboard and disable them from there.  But what do you do when you can’t disable them because you can’t log in?

Yup I was having the same problem with the wp-admin page as I was the site in general – blank page.

Now, my webhost is me – I have a server I rent on which I set up Linux – there’s no Cpanel or any real support.  I’m on my own.

So here’s what I did:   I logged into webmin and selected mySQL server.  You could also do this with phpMyAdmin.

When you are in your database, find the wp_options table.  Within that table, look for an entry called “active plugins.”  It should have a field value starting with a{9 (or some other number) with all your plugins listed.  Change the 9 or what ever number it is to 0 (zero).  This disables your plugins.  Now see if your home page displays.

If it does then you’ve found at least part of the problem.

Now for part 2.  I got my site to display but I still couldn’t log into wp-admin.  It took a little more research to find out that I probably needed to log out of the admin page first.  Apparently my wp-admin had somehow determined I was still logged in and that is what was preventing me from loggin in.

So you need to go to http://yoursite/wp-login.php?action=logout to log yourself out of wordpress.  Of course you are going to need to replace “yoursite” with the actual site URL.

Once I did this I was able to see my login box again, and then I was able to log in.  From here I went and reactivated all my plugins and now I’m back in business.

Oh ya, if you are using Chrome and trying to access your site but you get this error:

Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

Try the logout thing first – that should clear it up.  Take from me – someone who has spent the morning trying to troubleshoot this.  It should work great.
